Marcus Tavernier is a target for Manchester United.

A fee around £40m is being mentioned, with possible competition from Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Here’s my honest take on it.

1.The logic behind the link

Tavernier is versatile: he can play attacking midfield, left wing, right wing, or as an advanced No.8.

He’s Premier League proven and in his prime (26).

Under Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth he’s become a high-energy pressing player, something INEOS seems to want.

This season he has roughly 5 goals and 3 assists in the Premier League with solid chance creation numbers.

For a squad player, that’s decent output.

2.But £40m is where the debate starts

That fee is the big issue.

Pros

•Homegrown player

•Versatile

•Work rate fits modern pressing systems

•Good set-piece delivery

Cons

•Not elite production

•Not a game-changer

•Already 26 (limited resale value)

For £40m you normally expect a clear starter-level talent for United.

3.What it might say about United’s strategy

If this rumour is true, it probably means one of two things:

Scenario A — squad depth approach

INEOS want Premier League-proven rotation players rather than risky signings.

Scenario B — fallback option

Some reports suggest he might be a secondary target if United miss out on bigger signings.

That would make more sense.

4.My overall verdict

As a squad player: 👍 Good signing

As a starting attacker: 👎 Not good enough

If United signed him as:

Rotation winger / attacking midfielder → reasonable

Key attacking signing of the window → disappointing

💬 My personal rating for the move:

Squad depth: 7/10

Starting XI upgrade: 4/10
