It’s an interesting rumor, but a few things need to line up before it becomes realistic.
First, from a footballing perspective, Anthony Gordon actually does make sense for FC Bayern Munich. He’s high-energy, aggressive in pressing, and direct in transition—traits Bayern have leaned into more recently, especially in big Champions League games. His output this season is solid, and he’s shown he can handle a high-intensity system. So stylistically, you can see why Bayern would be interested.
But the real obstacle is Newcastle United. They’re not a selling club right now, especially not for key players entering their prime. Gordon is homegrown, improving, and fits their long-term project. Unless there are financial pressures (like PSR constraints), Newcastle have very little incentive to negotiate—certainly not at a “reasonable” price from Bayern’s perspective.
From Bayern’s side, their transfer strategy under Max Eberl and Christoph Freund has been more disciplined. They’ve walked away from deals before when valuations got out of hand. So if Newcastle demand something huge (which they likely will), Bayern could easily pivot to alternatives—as Plettenberg hinted.
There’s also the squad context. Bayern already have wide options, so Gordon wouldn’t be a desperation signing—more of a tactical upgrade or rotation piece. That weakens their negotiating urgency even further.
So overall:
✔️ Good tactical fit
❌ Very difficult transfer to pull off
⚖️ Likely depends on Newcastle’s financial situation more than player willingness
If I had to guess, this feels like a “keep an eye on it” situation rather than a deal that’s close. Bayern showing interest is believable—but actually getting Gordon out of Newcastle is the hard part.
Curious what you think—do you see him as Bayern starter quality, or more of a rotation option there?
